Travel fantasy: Yurts

My twin sister and her husband took a weekend getaway to Big Sur and stayed in a yurt! They said it was one of their coolest vacations. How invigorating to spend the day hiking and swimming, and in the evening, you can drink wine on your deck, breathe the salty air, and watch the sunset. Yurts also seem like a great baby step for those of us who aren't big campers: You get to be in nature and sleep in a bed. Good for wusses!

Have you ever stayed in a yurt? Would you want to? Big Sur looks incredible.

P.S. More travel fantasies, and are you the camping type?

Love yurts! We always stay in one at a Georgia state park we like to go to. It's right on the water- we call staying in yurts"comfort camping"!

  7. I went on a yurt-ing weekend a few weeks ago with my husband and a bunch of our friends, here in Oregon. We are a group that camps a lot, but this was perfect for the winter in Oregon, where we never know if it is going to rain or not! You should definitely try it!

  8. We stayed in a yurt at Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington and loved it. They were great and the best part is that they have an electric heater for chilly nights. A lot of state parks on the west coast have them.

  9. I think we stayed at the same spot several years ago. Was it Tree Bones? If so, it was stunningly beautiful, but sleeping in the yurt was not fun. It may have been the time of year, though I think it's always pretty windy at night in Big Sur. We said afterwards that it felt like sleeping inside of the drum on which the end of the world was being sound. It was so loud we did not sleep a wink!

  13. I stayed in a yurt in Mongolia a few years ago -- it was part of this whole Genghis Khan, riding ponies across the plains, etc. etc. Mongolian fantasy -- and I guess the traditional way of doing it is that you simply sleep on carpets on the floor? And this is horrible, and maybe we should have just sprung for a cleaner/more expensive place, but I stayed up the whole night thinking, "lice, lice, lice."

I didn't get lice. Still, yurt + bed seems like a better option.

  15. There are some BEAUTIFUL yurts up Millcreek Canyon in Salt Lake City. In the winter, you snowshoe in and then you're up in the mountains, all by yourself, with nothing but nature and your loved one(s). So fun!

The Big Sur ones look amazing!

  16. Big Sur is one of my fave places in the world. It's wild, windswept, yet beautiful and relaxing. So close to nature.

I've hung out in a yurt and love the atmosphere of it- round, open and cozy.

I never realized some operate as hotels- will have to check it out!!

  26. My boyfriend and I went on a double-date yurting adventure with my best friend and his girlfriend last month. It was one of the best holidays I've ever been on! We went cross-country skiing, skating and hiking during the day and snuggled up in front of our wood burning stove with a glass of wine every night.

We've already booked it for reading week next year!

  41. We just considered booking a yurt here for our honeymoon actually! We discovered there aren't bathroom facilities in the yurt (duh) and there is not a ton of privacy (noise travels through the campsite), so we chose to go elsewhere for our honeymoon, but they have GREAT customer service (speak to Donna) and we definitely plan to visit in the future. Many places in Big Sur don't allow children, but this place does (over age 6) so we intend to come back with our 7 yr old. How funny that you posted this today!

  46. My dad and I traveled around Mongolia for three weeks, where they originated and are called "gers." After driving all day not seeing another soul, only camels, we would come upon a small cluster and stay the night in someone's guest ger. Or if you saw one during the day, you just pop in and have lunch. Can you imagine coming upon a stranger's house in the states and coming in for a shared lunch?! Needless to say, I am a huge yurt fan and would love to go to Big Sur.

Cool! I've never stayed in a yurt, but the town I grew up in in coastal Maine had more than its fair share of aging hippies and had a small community of yurts in the woods! People lived in them full-time, year-round, through the Maine winter. I visited one and it was cool, save for the obvious difficulty of decorating a round home. :-)

    hey there.
    i live in a yurt.
we've modified it to be more cosy (ie. more insulation, poured adobe floors, solid windows, woodstove), but it's still a big tent.
one of the yurt companies is located in my town in western colorado.

I stayed in a teepee (tipi?!) with my boyfriend last year, and there were yurts on the same campsite, it was great! In the UK it's called glamping, as in glamorous camping, where you don't have to put up a tent, get wet or worry about sleeping on the ground in sleeping bags! The yurts even had solar panels on the roof so you could have electricity if you needed it, although candles are more romantic! Xxx

  98. Big Sur is one of my all time favorite places to visit....and btw, it's amazing to be there when pregnant. Most of the hotels have all organic shampoos, etc bc they are so eco-conscious. We've always wanted to stay in the yurts but I think they don't allow kids...true? So, sort of doesn't work for us. If you ever go to Big Sur you MUST go to the Big Sur Bakery!!!! 123. Big Sur is breathtaking. I camped there the summer after I graduated from college with my best friend. I went to visit her in SF and we went up to her parents' house in Sonoma county and then we drove all the way down from sonoma to Los Angeles. Along the way we stopped every where including Big Sur. It was so long ago and I honestly can't wait to do the trip again. We did the whole thing in about 4 days and then I stayed with my cousin for a while in Laguna Beach and continued the drive into Mexico and then back up to Las Vegas before coming back home. A fantastic trip. Next time a Yurt sounds like SO much fun. I'm not much into camping anymore so it would be fantastic!

I was just looking for a nice place to stay on our way up to SF next week...so I was so happy finding your post. But now I had to learn that this place doesnt welcome babies! No kids at all below 6ys of age!!!!
Wouldn't recommend this to anyone anymore!

  128. My husband is an anthropologist; I think he'd LIVE in a yurt if I'd just agree. I have this theory on camping:

I've notice that "campers" tend to be people who are heavy packers. I'm an extremely light packer. I once packed one carry-on for three people {including an infant using cloth diapers} for a two week vacation. Camping takes so very much stuff it makes me feel ... stifled and overwhelmed. It's for heavy packers; spas are for light packers.

I had a friend in college who lived in a yurt a few miles from our campus. She really loved it. I'm not sure I can make it home, but I would love to try a vacation!

We stayed in one for Christmas, there was an easy hike to a botanical garden that was all lit up with lights. It was an amazing sunset, huge waves and lots of sea lions!

  135. My dear friends (a family of four) live in a yurt. They have a loft, a kitchen, bathroom, and a wood-burning stove to keep everything cozy. It's lovely.

I've stayed at Tree Bones (the resort in Big Sur you metioned) and it is awesome! It's great for both couples and families since they have such a great land set up which gives pretty much everyone their own space with an amazing view and scenery. I really can't say enough about the place. This past Thanksgiving was an unusual one where it was just myself and my mother and her boyfriend. I decided to try something unconventional for the holiday and book a stay at TreeBones and it turned out to be one of the most relaxing and wonderful family times I've had in a long time, not to mention Thanksgiving Day meal was completely prepared by the resort! Everything was organic and made perfectly. As I said, I cannot say enough about the place. If you're ever in CA in Big Sur, I would highly recommend it.
