My darlings, what are you doing this weekend? My twin sister is coming to visit to celebrate our birthday. I already got cheap Champagne from Whole Foods, and I'm excited to catch up and do nerdy sisterly things like pluck our eyebrows (we've already planned it:). Have a wonderful weekend, and here are a few fun posts from around the web...Slam-dunk bathroom makeover.
Would you get married at home?
After getting sick last week, this card made me laugh out loud.
How to make your ankles sexy.
Alex wrote a fascinating article about defriending.
Striped doormat.
Funny tip about baby names.
Beautiful business cards.
Hidden in paint.
Toby has watched this video about 8,000 times.
Watchin' Downton Abbey.
(Photo from The Godfather)

sounds like a great weekend!!

home sweet home with my fever :(
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous week-end!
ReplyDeleteLOVE that photo, Al Pacino is SO handsome in The Godfather movies :)
Aha, an interesting thought...how about handing out the striped doormat as a business card instead :P
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these links!

I would definitely get married at home if the crowd was small and someone else cooked/ catered. I love the peacock chair in that wedding post. Have a fabulous celebratory weekend with your sister!
ReplyDeleteWe're watching Downton Abbey, too!
ReplyDeleteI love your linky days - always good stuff in there.
That card is HILARIOUS. HILARIOUS and true!
ReplyDeleteI loved Alex's article! Well done.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to a really big market, unless it's even colder tomorrow, yesterday it was -40°C :p
ReplyDeleteLove the business cards! I'm going to be getting some soon. So thanks for the tip on these. :)

My birthday is this weekend and I'm plucking my brows too! If you go to a Benefit Brow bar, they'll give you a free shaping on your birthday. I'm hoping it looks classy, not tacky :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I just laughed so hard at the baby/sorry your sick card. I'm really sick today, and all I want to do is curl up in a ball on the sofa, but then I look up and my ten month old is making a breakaway for the cat food or the stairs. Sigh! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteYay for birthdays and sisters!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I did get married at my parents' house on the Hood Canal, it was very intimate and special. :)
I always read and love Alex's articles without noticing he wrote them until you post it! Clearly I need to pay better attention to bylines so I can put two and two together more often. Always going back to the one about the cheap holiday party with the potatoes from a few years ago. Loved it before I even knew your blog.
ReplyDeleteI love you and your blog! Coming to visit NYC at the end of March alone and I was hoping you could suggest some fun and exciting things to do solo.
ReplyDeleteOMG, I can't believe your husband Alex is... Alex Williams. I have read several articles from him in the NYT and I love his job.
ReplyDeleteThat's so cool, talented people being a couple.. awww...
I "defriended" - i.e., deleted - my Facebook account for the New Year, and so far it has been a-maz-ing. One of the commenters to Alex's (brilliant) article said that once you reach 50 or so, you can count all of your real, true, will-be-there-till-the-end friends on one hand. I'm 27, and I can do that RIGHT NOW. The word "friend" is now used so casually; a true friend is one of life's greatest gifts, and not something to be taken lightly.
ReplyDeleteAnklets need to make a comeback! I feel like in the mid-90s EVERY ankle was adorned!

How did you buy champagne at Whole Foods? You must share your secret! ;)
ReplyDeleteFor all non-NYers: grocery stores here don't sell wine. :(
Great links! Where do you get your photos from?

ReplyDeleteThank you for the article on breaking up with friends, as I've had to do that several times within the last few years.
ReplyDeleteAnd happy birthday! I hope you and your sister will have a great weekend!
Great article! I just heard it mentioned on the Manic Mommies podcast, too! And the carrrrd - too funny! Thanks for all the great links, Joanna. What fun videos, too!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday week-end!
have fun celebrating with your sister joanna! i must thank you for putting the question about "friends" out there on your fb page. i was one of the people alex interviewed for the article. it was so much fun to share even though i was shaking when he called to talk! the story has brought up a lot of good points for conversation amongst my friends. and sincerely, seeing my name and words in the sunday nytimes... wow.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I have strep so I won't be able to follow through on all of the fun plans I'd made. However, I'm going to take advantage of the involuntary down time: lots of Downton Abbey is in my future!
ReplyDeleteOh geez, I thought those two in the photograph looked vaguely familiar. It's been a while!
ReplyDeleteI love Downton Abbey--trying to catch up. This video was hilarious!
have you read diane keaton's memoir? good stuff!
ReplyDeleteOf course I HAD to click on "how to make your ankles look sexy" :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize your Alex wrote that NYTimes article! I absolutely loved it and sent it to at least four people and everyone responded saying how spot on it was. Such an interesting reality that is so often ignored.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog btw!

ReplyDeleteThe Lovely Box is the most ingenious idea! It reminds me of that scene in No Strings Attached when he shows up with cupcakes and a 'period mix'. Have you seen it?

ReplyDeleteAlex's article was spot on! I am in the process of defriending someone now. I like her, but or values are so different.
ReplyDeleteMy one saving grace is that we live an hour apart now so I can take a lot longer between connections. It has been a year since I saw her last.
Thanks Alex! (and you to Joanna! Happy Birthday weekend! I have 5 sisters so I know how special one must be to you.
xo
Jill
Happy birthday you two! My twin sister and I only live two blocks apart in the same city and even work at the same place (we carpool). I couldn't imagine not seeing her every day! Make this day a special one!
ReplyDeleteI found out a couple of months ago that the most traditional wedding you could have is an at-home wedding! Sometimes less really is more.
ReplyDeleteyou have the best blog. i've been reading it for years and i just love it. its my morning ritual to drink coffee with my little one on my lap and read your blog. thank you for giving me another good reason to get up and enjoy the day. love every link on this post - btw.

I really appreciate the column Alex wrote. I'm currently experiencing the painful end to what i thought was a meaningful friendship. i currently work in the same office as this person which exacerbates the situation, but i have come to realize that it was a desperately needed change, and my life has drastically improved for it.
ReplyDeletep.s. Happy Birthday to you and Lucy both!

Hey Joanna, I just dropper by to check your weekend links and found our little video up there - what a nice (and slightly embarrassing) surprise!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great celebration with your sister and Happy Birthday! xx
PS. I think Rosie thinks Happy New Year is something quite profound. She often says to me before bed, I love you, Happy New Year baby!
Article was great, unfriending was definitely easier when we weren't so trackable.
ReplyDeleteI got married at my dad's house and it was awesome. Even though it wasn't my home, it was great to have a wedding where no one was rushing the pace or shooing us out of certain areas. When we went up on the hill behind their neighborhood to take photos, neighbors were in their backyards cheering and yelling congratulations, it was wonderful. Also, the older folks were able to move inside to a comfy couch when it got chilly outside. :c)
sara, museums are always really fun when you're along -- the MoMA is super awesome. and you might sign up for a Murray's Cheese class one evening. they're awesome and you can meet other cool cheese lovers! finally, you might eat at the bar at some great places, so you can chat with the bartender and other diners -- like maybe the bar at Mermaid Inn in the East Village or Mary's Fish Camp in the West Village? have a wonderful time!!! xoxoxoxo
ReplyDeletethat photo is just beautiful- Diane Keaton is so beautiful and Al never looked cuter
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your business card link love Joanna! It has been lovely to see so many beautiful new "faces" over on my blog because of it. xo Ez
